When Hillary and Charles asked me to capture their Superstition Mountains Anniversary session, I was so excited! I am a lover of Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona, and I had been dreaming of a moody shoot among the Superstition Mountain Range!

Superstition Mountain Anniversary Session

Hillary and Charles currently live in Austin, Texas but are originally from the East Coast. Although they used to live relatively close, they were never able to experience the beauty that is Arizona!

Since it was somewhere that they had always dreamed of visiting, they figured that it would be a perfect way to celebrate their anniversary! To make the trip memorable, they decided it would be fun to get their pictures taken! They wanted to capture this particular time and season of their relationship! I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to remember a specific time than to get an anniversary session done in the desert with the Superstition Mountains as the backdrop!

Before their session,  they kept mentioning how “awkward” and “nervous” they were! However, during the shoot, I got them loosened up really quickly. I even played one of their favorite salsa songs, “Suavemente” by Elvis Crespo, which loosened them up even more.

When in doubt, if a couple is feeling stiff, play a little salsa music and let them DANCE!

Superstition Mountains Details

The Superstition Mountains are located about 45 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona! To access these mountains, you will need to go to the Lost Dutchman State Park which is just at the range’s base! This state park is named after the legend of the lost gold mine. The park and mountains are in the Sonoran Desert.

There are three hikes in the area that are my favorite trails to take my couples to:

  1. Lost Dutchman State Park: Treasure Loop Trail – 2.3 miles, Loop Route
  2. Lost Dutchman State Parl: Sip Draw Trail – 4.0 miles, Out & Back Route
  3. Superstition Mountains: Peralta Canyon Trail – 4.5 miles, Out & Back Route

There truly aren’t any bad views throughout the park. However, my recommendation to you is to make sure to stay until the sun escapes behind the mountains! The view is even more breathtaking.

If you are looking for the perfect “GOLDEN HOUR” location, this is the place! It gives off that beautiful sunset glow that only the Arizona Desert can provide!

Superstition Mountains Anniversary Session

The Superstition Mountains are one of my favorite locations in the Pheonix Valley. I love not only exploring but also capturing couples there!

Every time I am there, I am reminded that it has similar landmarks as Sedona just with neutral tones instead of the red that Sedona’s rocks bring out. Each and every photoshoot that I shoot there always turns out incredible, and Hillary and Charles’ Superstition Mountain Anniversary Session was no different!

There is nothing like these gorgeous landmarks with tall cactus everywhere. You didn’t hear this from me, but the word on the street is that these mountains are the second most photographed mountains second to the Grand Canyon.
