When it comes to surprise proposals, there’s a certain magic that fills the air, and it’s one of my favorite sessions to capture. Sedona has long held a special place in my heart, with its captivating red rocks and iconic landscapes – it’s a perfect destination for romance.
So, when Daryl reached out to plan a surprise proposal for his girlfriend, Kim, at Devil’s Bridge, one of Sedona’s most enchanting spots, I knew I had to be there to capture every teary-eyed moment.
Why Devil’s Bridge Is a Dream Proposal Spot
Devil’s Bridge, the largest natural sandstone arch in Sedona, offers sweeping views and an incredible sunset glow that makes it one of the most breathtaking proposal locations.
The natural red rock, iconic to Sedona, adds to the unforgettable backdrop that truly embodies the beauty of the desert. Known for its popularity, Devil’s Bridge is one of the top two most frequented hikes in the area, drawing people from all over to experience its grandeur.
Since weekends bring a flood of visitors, Daryl and I planned his proposal on a Tuesday to avoid the crowds. The hike itself is relatively short, about 1.1 miles one-way, but it provides the perfect mix of adventure and awe.
The trail starts with a gentle path on a dirt road before transitioning into a more exciting, rocky climb. Once at the top, couples can take the iconic bridge photo, surrounded by sweeping views of the Sedona landscape.
The Perfect Proposal Plan at Devil’s Bridge
Daryl was already planning a week-long Arizona road trip with Kim, where they’d explore the desert in a van, stopping at some of the state’s most picturesque spots.
The trip was a romantic adventure in itself, but Daryl had an even bigger surprise in mind. We coordinated to meet in the parking lot, where Daryl and Kim would start the hike, with me trailing them a few minutes behind, blending in as just another hiker. As a photographer, blending in was key – my camera stayed tucked away, so Kim wouldn’t suspect a thing.
Once they reached the bridge area, we executed our plan. I pretended to be a kind stranger, offering to take their photo on the bridge – a common practice for visitors here. Kim had no idea that I was actually Daryl’s hired photographer, capturing every second of what would be one of the most memorable moments of her life. As they stood on the bridge, Daryl dropped to one knee, and in that instant, Kim realized the beautiful surprise he had planned all along.
And of course, she said *yes*!
Celebrating a New Chapter
After the big moment, I joined them with a bottle of champagne and two glasses so they could soak in the moment together. With the sun setting, we took a few more photos to capture the dreamy colors of Sedona’s evening sky.
Watching them celebrate and seeing their joy was a truly special experience, and it was an honor to witness the beginning of this new chapter in their lives.
