Okay, so you’re engaged!!! You’ve booked your Phoenix desert engagement session and now you’re staring at your closet like: “What the heck do I even wear for this?”
Trust me—you are not alone.
I get this question all. the. time.
And that’s exactly why I put together this guide.
Whether you’re panicking over outfit ideas or just want a little inspiration for what photographs beautifully in the desert, I’ve got you covered with my go-to advice, some outfit links you can shop now, and a few favorite stores to check out.
So take a deep breath.
Pour a glass of wine.
Let’s make this outfit-picking thing easy (and even kinda fun!).

The Phoenix desert is a mood.
It’s golden and glowing, full of warmth and texture, and changes completely with the light. So when choosing your outfit, it’s all about playing with that glow and wearing something that feels true to you.
I always tell my couples: wear something that makes you feel good in your skin.
If you’re comfy and confident, your photos will show it. Period.

My sessions usually run around 60–90 minutes, always timed around golden hour (because the light is chef’s kiss).
I recommend bringing two outfits:
Want to know why?
The casual fit lets you move around—think piggyback rides, running, dancing, and even getting tossed over your partner’s shoulder if you’re into that kind of thing (and I always am).
The dressy outfit? That’s when the magic hits. Flowing fabric + desert wind + golden light = a literal dream (TRUST ME ON THIS).

This isn’t the time to try something super out of character. You don’t need to reinvent yourself for your engagement photos. Instead, think of it as dressing like the most polished, slightly elevated version of your real self—the “you” that shows up to a nice dinner or a special night out. When you feel like yourself, it shows in every single photo.
Ladies, this one is REALLY going to apply to you.
If it’s tight or strapless, give it the mirror wiggle test. You’ll be walking, spinning, and moving a ton.
Beige, white, sage, rust, taupe, olive—all desert-approved. But if sparkles or bold color feel more you, I say bring it on. (Just pair it with something more neutral on your partner.)
Take it from me, lighter fabrics work best in the heat.
If you’re shooting in winter, deeper tones look amazing. However, I do recommend refraining from wearing red in Sedona unless you want to disappear into the rocks.
If one of you wears a print, keep the other in solids. Logos, big graphics, or loud patterns? Let’s skip ’em, deal?

You don’t need to twin it up—think “we look great next to each other,” not “we’re wearing the same outfit.” It’s all about choosing colors and textures that complement, not copy. A good rule of thumb? If one of you is wearing something patterned or bold, the other should lean into solids or neutrals to balance it out. That way, your outfits flow together without competing for attention.
If you’re torn between two tops or shoe options, bring them. I’ll help you decide once we’re on location. And PSA: don’t wear your wedding day shoes. The desert has zero chill when it comes to dust and stains.
Unless it’s layered with a jacket, sweater, or something with texture, strapless styles can sometimes give the illusion that you’re not wearing anything at all—especially in tighter crops or certain angles. Not exactly the vibe you’re going for. If you love a strapless look, we can absolutely make it work—just be mindful of how it photographs and consider bringing a backup layer.
NINE | Embrace Flow
Flowy dresses that catch the breeze? Yes, please. There’s something about the way light fabrics move with the wind in the desert—it adds instant romance and softness to your photos. Whether it’s a dramatic twirl or just a subtle breeze catching your hem, that kind of movement brings your images to life in the most magical way.
A wide-brimmed hat? Love. A smartwatch or huge wristband that distracts from your face? Maybe not. Oh, and do those nails! Your ring is gonna get lots of close-ups.

Let’s talk shopping. I know everyone’s style, body type, and budget are totally different—which is why I love having a mix of options. Whether you’re looking to splurge on something special or keep it simple and affordable, these are some of my go-to places that consistently deliver pieces that look amazing in photos.

Desert Casual Vibes

This isn’t just a photoshoot—it’s a date night.
Plan dinner after (but keep in mind, Sedona restaurants close early). Start getting ready early so you’re not in a rush. Blast music while you get dressed. Have a drink if you want one. Or bring one with you to the shoot!
And hey—being nervous is totally normal. You’re not models. You’re just two people in love. I’ll walk you through everything, help pose you naturally, and keep it fun and light. You’ll warm up fast—I promise.

I’ve helped couples plan outfits via text, DM, email, and even in the car right before their shoot. No shame. I’m your hype woman and your stylist when you need it. Always here to help make sure you look and feel like the best version of yourselves.
At the end of the day, your outfit should make you feel beautiful, confident, and most importantly—like you.
Now let’s get you dressed and meet in the desert.
