Planning engagement photos? Discover why Tlaquepaque Engagement Session in Sedona offer the perfect artistic setting for your session.

If you’re dreaming of a Sedona engagement session that feels romantic, artistic, and a little bit Old World, you have to consider Tlaquepaque. This session was my first time shooting at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, and I can honestly say that I’m already counting down the days until I get to go back.

It’s one of those locations that just feels like a love story is unfolding as you walk through it. Between the textured walls, vine-covered courtyards, arched doorways, and warm light, it’s straight-up magic.

What Is Tlaquepaque and Where Is It In Arizona?

Tlaquepaque (pronounced tuh-LAH-keh-PAH-keh) is a beautiful arts and shopping village right in the heart of Sedona, Arizona. It was designed to look like a traditional Mexican village and is packed with charm—cobblestone walkways, stucco archways, colorful tiled fountains, wrought iron gates, and lush sycamore trees that stretch overhead like a canopy.

The name Tlaquepaque comes from the Nahuatl language and means “the best of everything.”
Honestly, it lives up to the name.

The entire village is located along Oak Creek, so you’ve got a peaceful, shaded setting with soft light, flowing water, and blooming courtyards that change with the seasons. And all of it sits just minutes away from Sedona’s signature red rock views.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’ve wandered these paths before, Tlaquepaque gives you that instant “this is special” feeling. Plus, it shows up beautifully in photos.

Why Tlaquepaque Is One of the Best Sedona Engagement Session Locations

This spot is truly one of the best hidden gems for engagement photos in Northern Arizona.
Here’s why it’s so loved by couples (and photographers!):

Old World Romance Meets Arizona Charm

Tlaquepaque looks like a village out of a European fairytale, but it’s right here in the Southwest. The Spanish-style architecture, terracotta tones, rustic wooden doors, and tiled staircases all give your engagement photos that timeless, cinematic feel.

Artistic + Elegant Backdrops at Every Turn

If you’re looking for something more elevated than an open field or red rock overlook, Tlaquepaque delivers. There’s so much built-in texture and personality—colorful mosaics, ivy-covered walls, fountains, lantern-lit hallways, and archways that frame each shot like a painting. It’s like getting five locations in one without ever needing to drive.

Gorgeous Natural Light

This place was made for photography. The tall sycamore trees, stone walls, and shaded pathways create the softest, most flattering natural light. Even in mid-afternoon, the light is filtered and golden—especially dreamy for portraits.

Cozy Corners for Candid Moments

What I love most is that it never feels crowded. Even though you’re right in the middle of Sedona, there are so many quiet nooks and walkways where couples can be themselves. It makes it easier to relax and capture those real, in-between moments that bring a session to life.

The Best of Both Worlds

Want red rock views and romantic Spanish architecture? Tlaquepaque is just minutes from some of the most scenic hiking trails and viewpoints in Sedona. That makes it easy to start your session with cozy, village vibes and then head out for something wild and dramatic to end the evening.

Tips for Shooting at Tlaquepaque in Sedona

A little planning goes a long way when shooting at Tlaquepaque.
Here’s what to keep in mind:

Timing is Everything

Sedona can get busy, especially on weekends or during peak travel seasons. Tlaquepaque is located right in town, so parking and crowds can be a factor. I recommend arriving early and aiming for a weekday session if possible.

Heads up: Many weddings and events at Tlaquepaque begin setting up around 5 PM, which means shops close and parts of the courtyard may be unavailable for photos. To avoid surprises, schedule your session earlier in the afternoon or call ahead to ask about the event schedule.

You’ll Need a Photo Permit

Tlaquepaque does require a $100 photo permit to shoot on the property.

It’s worth every penny if you want this gorgeous location all to yourself. You can apply for a permit directly on their website, or contact them by phone at (928) 282-4838 or email at visitorinfo@tlaq.com.

Outfits that Match the Vibe

Tlaquepaque’s warm tones and Spanish-style details pair beautifully with soft neutrals, warm earth tones, flowy fabrics, and textures like linen or lace.

Bonus Idea: Propose at Tlaquepaque

Tlaquepaque is one of the dreamiest places to pop the question. You get all the elegance of a planned moment without the stress of a hike, a crowd, or unpredictable weather.

Dress up, grab a bouquet, and plan a stroll through the village before dropping to one knee under the trees. I’d be honored to help you capture it.
